Our pursuit of God. Yeah, let’s just stop there for a moment and think about that. We pursue God. We chase after Him. We look for Him in the highest and lowest places. We search the deep and launch into the stars believing completely that when we search for God we will find Him.

That investigative nature is born out of the truth of God’s Word. Jeremiah 29:12-14 from the Hebrew Scriptures reads,

Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. 13 You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you, declares the Lord, and I will restore your fortunes and gather you from all the nations and all the places where I have driven you, declares the Lord, and I will bring you back to the place from which I sent you into exile.

There exists a promise that as we seek after God He reveals himself to us. In this seeking after God we grow closer to him. We begin to put into practices various spiritual disciplines in order to help us better grasp who He is and who we are in light of His glory. We are constantly cultivating the soil of our hearts so that growth can burst forth.

Susan S. Phillips has written a beautiful work in The Cultivated Life. She gives many detailed descriptions and options for spiritual practice and discipline that can help in the cultivation of our lives as we seek after God. Cultivating is hard work and it can become monotonous. Her goal in this book is to remove the monotone and give way to a beautiful flourishing canvas of color and life.
